Social Inclusion

Brinnington Pantry is a community group for people living in Brinnington. For just £4.50 each week local residents can join up as members and access a whole range of benefits. You’ll be able to choose a guaranteed 10 items from a huge variety of groceries, fresh fruit and veg plus all the usual store cupboard favourites. Click here for more information and opening hours.

Stockport Support Hub

Weekly sessions for the Deaf Community take place every Wednesday at Cornerstone in Stockport. The sessions are supported by a BSL Interpreter and provide help with barriers accessing other services, digital skills and financial support. Independent Living

The Ageing In Place team are working closely with residents and our local partners such as Age UK and The Big Local to provide a high profile presence within Brinnington, supporting people to age well through a range of support services. Pop-ups and Wellbeing Events are planned, including the roll out of the Brinnington Circle Newsletter.

The Community Garden at First House is being developed, alongside the established allotment at Webb Lane providing opportunities to connect communities.

Housing Management

Resident meetings are held regularly, covering Lancashire Hill, Mottram Street, Heaton and Norris, York Street. Look out for dates in the diary or contact your Housing Officer to find out when the next date is - we'd love to see you there.

Lancashire Hill Surgery takes place every Wednesday from 9.30am -11.30am.

Community Buildings

First House offers a range of services and advice, including Brinnington Library, Your Local Pantry, Stockport Credit Union, Citizens Advice and First Stop Community Café and employment and training advice, in addition to community and voluntary groups delivering events and activities.

Development

We are building 68 new homes at St. Thomas' Gardens in Shaw Heath for a mixture of Affordable Rent and Shared Ownership. It is hoped the project will start on site in Winter 2024.

We are planning to build 6 Bungalows at Truro Avenue in Brinnington for social rent, 3 houses and one fully wheelchair accessible bungalow at Alpine Rd. in Stockport Town Centre.

Independent Living

Working closely with the Asian Heritage Centre and Stockport Council, the Independent Living Team provide a Wednesday afternoon activity at Queens Gardens.

Development 

We are currently on site at Edinburgh Close, our latest flag-ship Extra Care scheme on Councillor Lane in Cheadle. This scheme will provide 49 apartments for older persons including 35 for social rent and 14 for older persons shared ownership.

'Singing for Memory' runs fortnightly on Wednesdays, 11am at Offerton Community Centre. The session is open to those living with dementia and their carer at a price of £2 per person to cover costs.

Development

We are building 144 new homes for affordable rent and shared ownership at Hempshaw Lane in Offerton. New homes will hand over from summer 2024 until spring 2025. We expect to be starting on site during summer 2024 with 32 apartments for social rent on London Rd. in Hazel Grove. We are also building 87 homes for social rent and shared ownership at Melford Rd. in Hazel Grove. Homes have already started handing over with completions from summer 2024 until summer 2025.

Money Advice

Our Money Advice service continues to support our customers. By offering free, confidential, and impartial money and benefits advice hundreds of customers have been able to find a solution to their financial problems.

The Team can support you to:

  • Apply for all of the benefits you are entitled to
  • Act on challenging decisions to stop or change your benefits
  • Appeal your benefits through to a tribunal hearing
  • Explain any changes to the benefits system and how they are likely to affect you
  • Apply for discretionary payments and grants to help with rent arrears
  • Reduce water charges
  • Budget
  • Find additional support, such as digital skills, energy advice or ongoing tenancy support

SHG will continue to work with the National Illegal Money Lending team to tackle this criminality and support and advise any customers effected.

Universal Credit is simplifying the benefits system by combining the following six benefits and tax credits (Housing Benefit, Income Support, Income-Based Job Seekers Allowance, Income-Related, Employment and Support Allowance, Working Tax Credits and Child Tax Credits) into one single monthly payment.

This 5 year cyclical check will ensure that all opening windows are maintained and safe for use. 

5 Anti-Flood Measures

This will mitigate the likelihood of flood water entering homes in areas of Stockport that have been identified as having a' low risk' of localised flooding.

The replacement of cabling will maintain and improve the electric safety of buildings.

Upgrades to the balusters on the communal stairwells inside of blocks will improve the safety of customers and visitors.

Replacement of the lift suspension ropes to maintain the safety of residents using lifts within the building.

This will ensure the warden call system remains operational and supported following digital and IT upgrades that the system connects to.

Housing Management

The Housing Management Team will continue to provide a responsive tenancy and Estate Management Service across the borough  that meets the needs of customers; undertaking regular estate and block inspections, completing tenancy visits and neighbourhood walkabouts and estate 'clean-ups' with customers, partner agencies and colleagues. This collaborative approach to managing our stock, especially our multi-storey blocks, will help to tackle issues. 

We will continue to:

Work closely with local councillors and residents in all areas of the borough to address and resolve issues, holding regular meetings with residents.
 

Build relationship with our tenants and make sure they are signposted to different services within SHG and externally when support is needed.  

Support Family Hubs across the borough to build connections and relationships that enable families to access the right support. 

Tackle environmental crime including fly tipping across the borough, utilising CCTV to  gather evidence, take legal action and recharging those responsible.

  • Help@Home – partnership with AgeUk Stockport - assistance with property condition and hoarding behaviours to support customers to declutter & improve property condition and access services to address the underlying factors.
  • The Community Hub – partnership with PURE Innovations assisting customers to reduce social isolation through accessing social groups in the community. Safer Neighbourhoods
ASB Woodall

The Safer Neighbourhoods Team are committed to resolving anti-social behaviour within our communities so residents feel safe where they live. We have excellent working relationships with Greater Manchester Police and other agencies and continue to work closely to resolve Anti-social Behaviour. Keep your eye out for ASB awareness/action days on your estate to understand our full commitment to supporting residents and offering interventions to those who require this.

We will look to utilise our Neighbourhood Resolution Officer, as an early intervention to resolve noise interference, and if the noise continues, we will take the necessary enforcement action against the perpetrators.

Our Complainant Support Specialist will continue to support the most vulnerable victims of Anti-social Behaviour.

Beacon Counselling

A free counselling service is available to Stockport Homes tenants. This is delivered by Beacon Counselling. Tenants are able to self-refer by completing a short online form. The counselling sessions are able to support with topics such as relationship breakdown, worries around cost of living or stress in work, anxiety, recent or past trauma or dealing with a life change such as bereavement or a life changing illness.

Each year the SKylight Community Fund offers local groups the chance to bid for any amount of money up to £2,000.
