Help we can provide
Housing Support Service
The Housing Support Service can offer help on a drop-in basis at our reception at Cornerstone, or through a home visit if needed. Whether it is just some one-off advice or on-going help is needed we can assist.
This covers:
- Budgeting and money advice – for example if you have adult children living at home and have ‘non-dependant’ deductions from your benefits.
- Resolving repair issues – overcrowding can lead to more wear and tear on properties.
- Help accessing furniture and even furnished tenancies – bunk beds and other space saving furniture can make a real difference.
- Decluttering and maximising use of available space.
- Helping set up routines and household agreements to minimise conflict arising from overcrowding.
- Accessing activities in the wider community to provide time out from issues at home.

Housing Options
To apply for rehousing, you need to register through Homechoice at www.homechoicestockport.org. If you need help to apply, then please call us on 0161 217 6016.
Your application will be assessed in line with the Council’s allocation policy, which gives priority for factors such as overcrowding, medical need and the time you have been waiting for a home. Details of how applications are assessed is available here
www.stockporthomes.org/homechoice
When you are registered, we will contact you to let you know how many rehousing points you have been given, and you can start to apply for homes advertised on the Homechoice website. Properties are offered to applicants for each home with the highest level of need.
Even if you are very overcrowded and have been waiting a long time, you may still not receive an offer of a home because there are so many people in housing need.
If you are an existing council or housing association tenant, you can exchange your property with someone else in social housing. This does not have to be within Stockport.
There are a number of people in properties that are too large for them looking to downsize and we can try and link you to other tenants through the mutual exchange service www.stockporthomes.org/exchange-homes/.
You can also try and find a match on your own, for example by talking.
While more expensive than council or housing association tenancies and with less long-term security, the private sector offers a lot more choice. You can get help paying the rent through Local Housing Allowance, and some advice on how to find a home and what to expect from a landlord is available here
