Home insurance

You need to arrange your own home contents insurance as we do not arrange this for you. We strongly advise all tenants to take out home contents insurance as our insurance only covers the physical building NOT your furniture, belongings, or decorations. We offer all customers competitively priced home insurance to ensure that you are covered for theft, fire, or flood. For more information, please see the home contents insurance page

Adaptations

An adaptation is a physical alteration to your home to help you to live as independently as possible.

For more information about the range of adaptations available and how to apply please see the equipment and adaptations page

Pets

If you live in a property which is accessed through a communal hallway and does not have its own doorway to the outside, free roaming pets (like cats and dogs) are not allowed without written permission. Pets that live in cages or tanks are allowed. In all cases a pet permission form and pet agreement form must be completed before any new pets are brought home.

Please be aware that permission will not be granted for dogs to be kept as pets in multi storey.

If you live in a property without a shared hallway, you can normally keep one domestic pet such as a cat or dog. A pet permission form and pet agreement form must be completed before any new pets are brought home.

Please note that livestock including horses, pigs and chickens are not allowed on any Stockport Homes managed land without prior written permission.

Working animals, specifically guide dogs and hearing dogs, are not classed as pets, so are allowed in any property even where an animal restriction is in place.

Alterations

Before you carry out any alterations to your property you must complete the Installations and Alterations form to request written permission. Alterations might include (but are not limited to):

  • fitting your own kitchen / bathroom suite
  • installing patio doors - depending on the scale of the proposed alteration you may also need to request Planning Permission from Stockport Council. Any work must be carried out by qualified tradespeople and adhere to building regulations. Following completion of the works a Technical Surveyor will visit your property to inspect the work and ensure that it has been done to an acceptable standard.
