If equipment may not meet your needs, you could benefit from an adaptation.
What is an adaptation?
An adaptation is a physical alteration to your home to allow you to live as independently as possible. These can be either minor or major adaptations.
Minor adaptations include:
- Grab rails
- A half-step
Major adaptations include:
- Level access / walk-in shower
- Stair lifts
- Outside ramps
- Through-floor lift
- Widening doorways
- Ceiling track hoist
To determine if you would benefit from an Adaptation, an Occupational Therapist or Equipment and Adaptations Officer will look at whether adaptations to your property will help you.
Due to our limited housing stock, rehousing may be discussed with you as an alternative to adapting your home.

If you have a disability or health problem and think you would benefit from living in an adapted property you must register with Homechoice (opens in a new window) and complete a medical self-assessment form. The information you provide will be assessed by the Medical Housing Officer who will allocate points for your disability/health conditions which you can use to help you bid for properties.
You may also be contacted by the Occupational Therapist who will decide if you should be included on the Adapted Property Register.
Most properties with adaptations are advertised through Homechoice (opens in a new window) and are allocated using the Choice Based Lettings scheme. Details of how a property has been adapted are clearly shown on the advert. All applicants on the Homechoice (opens in a new window) register may bid for these properties but those on the Adapted Property Register will be given priority.
Properties that are wheelchair accessible are allocated by the Adapted Property Panel and are not advertised by Homechoice (opens in a new window)
You can find out more by reading our Moving to an Adapted Property Booklet
