Read below the latest safety update for Hanover Towers, Pendlebury Towers, The Longsons, The Bentleys, Clarkethorne Terrace and Stonemill Terrace.
The Longsons, The Bentleys, Stonemill Terrace, Clarkethorne Terrace
- 24 Hour Fire Safety Patrol
- Full Evacuation policy
- Annual Fire Risk Assessments.
- Fire detection alarms within homes.
- Door entry systems which restrict access to the building, keeping it secure.
Trained fire safety marshals are on site 24 hours a day.
They are:
- Walking around the inside and outside of the building
- Looking for anything that could cause a fire
- Giving early warnings and help in an emergency
- Answering questions and supporting residents
These patrols are a temporary measure and will remain in place until the new fire alarm system is fully installed and working.
These buildings operate a Simultaneous Evacuation Policy in line with the National Fire Chief Council guidance. If there is a fire or suspected fire, all residents must:
- Evacuate immediately.
- Leave your flat straight away, close the doors behind you, and use the nearest stairs.
- Do not use lifts.
- Once outside, call 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service.
- Do not re-enter the building until told it is safe to do so.
- Make your way to your fire assembly point:
The Longsons and Clarkethorne Terrace fire assembly point is on the basketball court.
The Bentleys and Stonemill Terrace fire assembly point is at the children's playground.
In a major incident, SHG (Stockport Homes Group) and Stockport Council will activate their emergency response plan.

Hanover and Pendlebury
- Compartmentation (passive fire protection and fire doors) ensures the communal area remains safe for evacuation and operationally safe for the fire service.
- Yearly Fire Risk Assessments
- A sprinkler system that puts out fires at the source
- Fire alarms in homes
- Strong fire safety management plans
- Door entry systems to keep the building secure
Hanover and Pendlebury DO NOT have 24-hour fire patrols.
They use a Stay Put / Stay Safe Policy because Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, the consultants who undertook the Fire Risk Assessments and SHG/Stockport Council are confident in the fire safety measures already in place in your buildings, outlined above.
Compliance Notice Progress Update
- Fire Door Management (Due: 09/01/2026) – Complete
We’ve reviewed and improved how we manage fire door safety.
A formal Fire Door Inspection Procedure is now in place, with clear responsibilities for staff and contractors.
Regular inspections are happening, and we have a clear process for fixing any issues.
This action is now complete.
- Biomass (Boiler Room) Fire Risk Assessment (Due: 09/07/2026) – On Track
Safety workshops have identified all the important controls already in place.
Recommendations to reduce risks have been developed.
Next steps: The technical assessment report will be submitted to the Building Safety Regulator before 09/07/2026.
- Fire Door Replacements (Due: 09/10/2026) – On Track
Fire door repairs are complete, and a site survey has confirmed what further work is needed.
BTP Architects have supported us in preparing the Building Control application.
Next steps: Approval must be obtained from the Building Safety Regulator by all housing providers before any fire doors can be replaced/provided in these types of building. The formal application to the Regulator, known as a ‘Gateway 2’ application has been submitted and we must now wait for formal approval before we can undertake these works
Approval is expected from the Regulator in the coming weeks/months to enable work to commence on 1 July 2026.
Hanover and Pendlebury Towers have a Stay Put / Stay Safe Policy, developed in line with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.
If there is fire or smoke in your flat:
- Get out immediately
- Close doors behind you
- Use the stairs only
- Call 999
- Do not go back inside until the fire service says it’s safe
If the fire is somewhere else in the building:
- Stay in your flat if you feel safe
- If you feel unsafe at any time, leave the building and call 999
- If the fire service tells you to leave, do so immediately
You do not need to evacuate unless told to do so.
In the event of a major incident, SHG and Stockport Council will implement their emergency response plan.

This helps us create Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs).
You can also meet the Fire Safety Marshals, who will explain safety procedures.
Our Building Safety Team will be in the plaza near the playground.
We’d love to see you there!

Myth Busting
We know there’s been a lot of discussion locally and online about recent incidents in some of our buildings.
We’ve seen questions, rumours and misinformation shared in person and on social media, and we want to be clear, transparent and reassuring about what we know.
Here’s the factual position on some of the issues we’ve been asked about most often.
1. Cladding at Lancashire Hill Is Safe
- Experts have checked the cladding
- It meets safety standards
- No repairs or changes are needed
2. Fire at The Bentleys
- The evacuation worked safely and quickly
- Fire stayed inside the flat where it started
- Smoke behaved as expected
- Safety measures worked well
3. Fire at Pendlebury Towers
- The fire happened in the bin chute
- The fire-resistant structure worked properly, and contained the fire
- No evacuation was needed
- The fire may have started from something thrown in the chute
Please do not put items in the chute that can burn or create a blockage.
