Rightsizing FAQs

Who can apply for Rightsizing

Rightsizing can help if you are living in a 3 or 4 bedroomed social housing property in Stockport and want (or need) to move to a 1-bedroom property.

Do I have to move if I contact the Rightsizing Service?

No. We would have an informal conversation to help us understand your situation and explain your rehousing options.

After our conversation, if you are eligible for Rightsizing support, we will ask you to register on with Stockport Homechoice to enable us to assess your housing needs and process any future property offers.

What if I decide not to move after speaking to you?

That’s completely fine. There’s no obligation to move and saying no won’t affect your tenancy or any other relevant support options

Can I choose where I move too?

Yes. You can tell us which areas you’d prefer to live in, including staying close to family, friends, or support networks. You won’t be asked to move somewhere you don’t want to live. But the more open you are to property type and area the more choice you will have.

Can I say no to a property offer?

Yes. You won’t be forced to accept a home you don’t want. We only offer properties that meet your needs.

Can I stay with Stockport Homes?

Yes, if you want to. However, we do work in partnership with other Stockport housing providers and if you are happy to change landlord, we may be able to find a suitable property through another provider whilst continuing to support you.

Do I get time to move if a suitable property is found?

Yes. We will cover rent on your new property for up to 4 weeks, depending on your personal and financial circumstances to give you more time to move

Will I get help with the practical side of moving?

Yes. We will offer you coordinated support throughout the moving process. We can assist with costs associated with moving such as packing boxes, removals charges, new carpets, cover rent on the new property giving you time to move etc

How long does the process take?

Timescales can vary depending on property availability and your preferences. Some tenants move quickly, while others take longer. We’ll keep you updated and move at a pace that feels right for you.

What type of home could I move to?

This depends on what’s available and what you need:

  • Rightsizing criteria will find a 1-bedroom property

  • Property type can vary (flat or bungalow).

  • Accessibility or mobility needs will be considered

What if I need a property bigger than a 1 bed?

If you want to move to anything bigger than a 1 bed, we have a designated Mutual Exchange team who can support, you with your downsizing options.  [email protected]

What if my circumstances change after I register?

That’s not a problem. If you no longer want to move just let us know and we will remove you from our caseload and close your application.
