Stockport marks International Day of Older Persons 2023
Stockport is made up of a really diverse range of communities: it’s what makes the borough such an exciting place to be! Sunday 1st October is 2023’s International Day of Older Persons, a chance to celebrate our older communities and the contribution they make to the borough. This year’s theme is ‘Knowing Our Place’, and looks to amplify the contribution of ageing communities to the past, present and future.
There are several events going on in Stockport to mark International Day of Older Persons this year.
On Wednesday 27th September, Age UK Stockport are hosting an event at Stockport College which explores the history of Stockport via photography. It’s set to be a fascinating delve into the past, and should be of interest to residents of all ages. Drop in from 1pm – 3pm, with refreshments provided and a chance to use Stockport College’s beauty department if you wish.
On Monday 2nd October, Age UK Stockport are teaming up with the council’s Public Health team to offer a drop in at the Age UK Stockport Hub (2 Castle Street, Edgeley, SK3 9AB). The Public Health team will be on-hand to offer blood pressure checks and general advice, while there will also be help and support with getting online from Starting Point. There will also be a screening of a classic movie to enjoy with friends! Pop in from 10am – 2pm.
Stockport Homes are also hosting two events to celebrate International Day of Older Persons, aimed at the older community. On Wednesday 4th October from 2pm – 3pm, there will be an event at Queens Court, Church Street, Marple, SK6 6BS, focused on keeping healthy in later life. Guest speakers from Age UK Stockport and Life Leisure will be in attendance to help residents find out more about the health and fitness events taking place in the Stockport area, as well as demonstrating some simple exercises that can be done to help keep you mobile and independent. Contact Sarah (07800618639) or Helen (07890897932) for more information.
Finally, on Thursday 5th October, Stockport Homes are organising an event at Brinnington Community Centre (35 Hereford Road, SK5 8ER) from 1pm – 5pm. Titled ‘Keeping Fit, Keeping Healthy’, there will be a talk from Lisa Arandale of Life Leisure at 1pm, followed by a curry and a quiz. There is a small fee of £3 to participate. No need to book – just drop in!
Councillor Keith Holloway, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care at Stockport Council, commented: “Here in Stockport we are lucky enough to have a whole range of people, young and older, living together in our vibrant, diverse communities. International Day of Older Persons is a chance to recognise our older residents’ contributions to our communities. Drop in to one of our partner events to celebrate the day, or just check in on an older friend, family member or neighbour if you can.”
The cost-of-living crisis is impacting many residents, including our older populations. If you are facing financial hardship, visit the Independent Age website to get support. There is also support available via the council’s cost-of-living hub, or call the helpline on 0161 474 2140.
