Stockport Homes Group and Stockport Council have customer and building safety as a top priority and work closely with the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) to keep residents of multi-storey blocks safe.
Following the tragedy at Grenfell in June 2017, the decision was made to invest over £10 million in installing sprinklers to all High-rise blocks across the Borough – further enhancing the extensive safety measures already in place. The project which began in July 2019, has now been successfully completed, with sprinkler systems installed in all 22 blocks, in 1579 flats, this is particularly exceptional given the additional pressures caused by the Pandemic.
The close working relationship with the fire and rescue service has been an undeniable success – the reassurance that this offered and continues to offer to customers is highly valued. Mat Rooney, Station Manager from GMFRS says, “We fully support this programme of retrofitting sprinklers into high rise residential properties as an effective means of reducing the risk to property and more importantly protecting lives. We would encourage everyone to engage with Stockport Homes in this important safety initiative.”
Councillor Helen Foster-Grime, Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing at Stockport Council added, " Stockport has been leading the way and we are proud to have been part of this extensive project with our outstanding partners Stockport Homes and the Fire Service. Creating safer homes is of the utmost importance to us and Stockport Homes. This project had vital cross-party support and is also a tribute to our late colleague Councillor Sheila Bailey, my predecessor as portfolio holder – who worked hard to secure the investment and help us champion safety in the light of Grenfell.”

This project is part of a much wider investment programme into building safety, over the last five years an additional £7 million pounds has been invested to ensure compliance with fire safety. This has included communal fire doors, smoke/heat alarms and compartmentalisation. We are committed to continuing to invest in the safety of the properties we manage.
