Stockport Homes is building Communities that Work!

Posted 17 May 2019

Stockport Homes is raising awareness of Communities that Work Week, taking place between 20-24 May 2019.

The national Communities that Work campaign aims to raise awareness of the work that housing organisations do to help social housing tenants, and the wider community, into work and long term employment.

Stockport Homes provides housing for people across Stockport and a key focus of our work is devoted to helping local tenants and the wider community into long term, rewarding work.

Over the past year, Stockport Homes has helped 419 people into work.

Stockport Homes has delivered a number of schemes across Stockport including, the Produce Hall pre-employment programme, the Women in Business course, Skills for life programme, McDonalds programme and the Future build event. Through these schemes, we’ve helped deliver training to 667 local people, some of whom have gone onto to find employment.

The Communities that Work campaign is being led by Give us a Chance (GUAC), the national social housing backed body, whose driving purpose is to help individuals into long term and rewarding employment.

The campaign is a response to a recent IPPR Report, which showed that social housing tenants are more likely to be unemployed than residents in any other tenure type nationwide.

In response to this, housing organisations are investing in employment training, connecting people to job opportunities, and providing career and personal development support including back to work assistance.

Robin Burman, Chair of Stockport Homes' Board said,

We are very proud to support Communities that Work, because we want to help raise awareness of the work housing organisations do to help their local people and communities into work. Our employment team have worked hard to bring our communities together and help local residents into long-term employment.
