Bogus callers

Most people who call at your home will be genuine but it’s important to follow the tips below before letting people into your home.

Top tips

Whenever you answer the door, remember to lock, stop, chain, check.

  • Lock: secure all your other outer doors as the person at the door may intend to distract you while an accomplice gets in through a back door
  • Stop: think about whether you’re expecting anyone
  • Chain: put the door chain on or look through the window or spyhole to see who’s there
  • Check: ask for an identity card and examine it carefully - you can always tell the caller to come back another time when someone will be with you

All our staff and contractors carry identification with them. If you are not sure if the person at the door is genuinely calling on behalf of Stockport Homes, please call the contact centre on 0161 217 6016 to check that the caller is genuine.

If you think you may have a bogus caller close the door and call the Police on 0161 872 50 50.
